Hyderabad: Despite the Police warning against strict action against those caging the Indian Roller (Palapitta), Telangana’s state bird, there were instances of some people caging the bird in iron cages during Dussehra. Hyderabad police commissioner, VC Sajjanar, had earlier clearly warned that harming animals and birds would invite strict legal action.

Acting promptly on reliable information from alert citizens, Hyderabad City Police raided three separate locations and rescued four birds.
Near the temple by Langar Houz Bapu Ghat, police freed two birds that were put in cramped cages and handed them over to Forest Department officials at KBR Park. At the Sri Chitragupta Swamy Temple in Chatrinaka, a bird held in a cage hung from a tree was rescued, and another bird kept in a cage near the temple at Mangalhat Balaji Nagar was also rescued. Both were handed over to forest officials.
“Capturing a helpless bird in the name of a festival, depriving it of food and water, and tormenting it does no good to anyone. It is not good for our society,” Hyderabad CP VC Sajjanar stated in a post shared on X. “How can anyone see auspiciousness in the cries of a bird, terrified and struggling between the bars of a cage just for the sake of money? True devotion means compassion for living beings, not imprisoning nature,” he added.
He also appealed to the public not to encourage such inhumane practices, and anyone who sees an incident that could harm wildlife is urged to act as a responsible citizen and report it immediately to the toll-free numbers 1800 425 5364 or 98033 38666, or by dialing 112.
