Hyderabad police intensifies probe in Afzalgunj firing incident

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police widened its probe into the firing incident that took place in Afzalgunj on Thursday night.

An hour after the incident, the police started examining surveillance cameras installed at the travel agency and its surroundings to zero in on the armed robbers. The police also checked lodges and other hotels in Afzalgunj to know if anyone from other States checked in without valid documents.

“We have formed special teams to nab the two-member armed robbers who were behind the daring robbery in an ATM at Bidar in Karnataka,” an official said, exuding confidence that the police would nab the robbers soon.

The gang allegedly shot dead two security guards at an ATM kiosk in Bidar and looted Rs 93 lakh, opened fire at a travels company manager at Afzalgunj here, injuring him in the leg and abdomen on Thursday in their bid to escape.

Police said the gang was trying to board a bus to Raipur and entered into an argument with the manager and opened fire. They then fled towards Osmania General Hospital.

The Hyderabad police sounded a red alert and started frisking operations in various localities, especially in the southeast, east, central and southwest zones to try and identify the attacker. According to the police, the duo entered State on a bike after the murderous attack in Bidar, and entered the city early on Thursday.

They intended to go to Raipur and headed to a travel office at about 3 pm and asked the manager for tickets. The manager, Mohammed Jahangir, became suspicious with their behaviour, and asked them to wait for a mini-bus to take them to the travel company bus waiting on the outskirts.

When Jahangir demanded their ID cards, one of the gang members opened fire on him resulting in injuries. The attackers were aged between 30 and 35 years and spoke Hindi and carried backpacks, the police said.
