Hyderabad Police Cautions People About Credit Card Frauds

The police urged citizens to follow the safety steps and report any suspicious transactions immediately to them

Hyderabad: The cybercrime unit of Hyderabad police warned the public about an increase in credit card–related frauds targeting cardholders through phishing, fake merchant sites, UPI/QR scams, reward-point redemption scams, credit-limit enhancement offers, fake customer-care numbers, and mobile app malware. The police urged citizens to follow the safety steps and report any suspicious transactions immediately.

The fraudsters are using phishing links or fake merchant pages, fake customer-care numbers, credit card enhancement fraud, malicious apps or APKs files, call-centre imposters, card skimming or cloning, reward and redemption scams, among modus operandi to dupe innocent people.

In an advisory, the police advised the people to avoid clicking links in unsolicited SMS, email or social media messages. Do not share OTPs, PINs, CVV, or full card numbers over phone, email, social media or messaging apps. Banks never ask for OTP/CVV/PIN.

Do not trust customer-care numbers found via casual web searches, classifieds, social media posts or unfamiliar websites. Always use the number on the back of your card, your bank’s official website (typed manually), or the bank’s official mobile app.

Never install apps, APK files or follow installation links sent by an unknown caller — only install bank apps from official app stores and verify the developer name. Install apps only from official app stores and check app reviews and permissions.

Enable transaction alerts (SMS/email) and review them regularly. Set transaction limits and require additional authentication for high-value transactions. Be skeptical of offers that pressure you to act immediately for rewards or refunds. The police asked the people to report suspected frauds to the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or online at cybercrime.gov.in
