Hyderabad: Plastic Recycling Campaign Launched

Organised by Switcheko, the initiative features a specially designed truck equipped with a plastic compressor and an incinerator. The unit will travel across the country, demonstrating how plastic waste can be responsibly managed and scientifically recycled.

Hyderabad: Members of PlastIndia 2026 and the Telangana and Andhra Plastics Manufacturers Association (TAAPMA) flagged off the Swachhata Yatra on Sunday at T-Hub, Hyderabad. The mobile campaign aims to raise awareness about plastic sustainability.

Organised by Switcheko, the initiative features a specially designed truck equipped with a plastic compressor and an incinerator. The unit will travel across the country, demonstrating how plastic waste can be responsibly managed and scientifically recycled.

Designed and manufactured in Telangana, the unit will first be showcased at various venues in the city during the International Kite Festival. It will then journey to New Delhi via Medak, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Nagpur, Bhopal, and Agra, collecting and processing plastic waste along the way.

Speaking at the launch, Rohit Kanugo, a member of the PlastIndia 2026 start-up committee, announced that the expo will also host the Bharat Next Challenge. This competition invites students and start-ups to present innovative ideas in sustainability and plastics recycling. Winners will receive a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and potential funding of up to Rs 1.5 crore from IIM-Calcutta to further develop their projects.

Safe disposal of e-wastes from today

An e-waste sanitation drive across the GHMC limits will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday, with temporary e-waste collection centres planned in every ward for public convenience.

On Sunday, announcements were made in several colonies regarding the safe disposal of e-waste. GHMC staff, accompanied by flex banners, visited households to spread awareness. Autos also moved through colonies announcing the two-day drive, though it remains to be seen whether collection vehicles will visit each colony during the campaign.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of proper electronic waste management, while ensuring systematic collection and scientific processing of e-waste from residential, commercial, and public spaces.

“We have informed residents that we will collect refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, mobile phones, televisions, batteries, UPS systems, power banks, and other electronic appliances,” said a GHMC official.

He added that sanitation staff, along with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs), have launched awareness campaigns to sensitise citizens about responsible e-waste disposal.
