Hyderabad: Owaisi Urges CM to Re-Introduce Mechanised Sweeping of Roads
The operations of these machines were ceased on June 30 reportedly due to a lack of funds.

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to re-introduce mechanised sweeping of roads, after their operations were ceased on June 30 reportedly due to a lack of funds. Owaisi cited the safety of workers, environmental impact, cost efficiency and productivity.
According to Owaisi, GHMC officials said the reason for stopping mechanised sweeping was the lack of funds and the deal with contractors under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) expiring. The agencies that clean CRMP roads are different from those sweeping other city roads.
A sanitary field assistant (SFAs) told Deccan Chronicle that sweeping the main roads was not an issue but speeding vehicles and their work timings were a concern.
An SFA said that more than main roads, sweeping flyovers was a bigger challenge. Sanitation staff of a particular area report to the SFA who is also a ground-level staff employed on an outsourcing basis. Mechanised sweeping was adopted in 2008 for the safety of sweepers.
Owaisi in his letter stated that he had learned that the reason behind cessation of work was the lack of budget / administrative sanction in the GHMC and expressed shock that such an elementary activity was put on hold due to paucity of funds.
He stated mentioned that GHMC was reportedly awaiting sanction for the past few months from the municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department with regard to Phase II of CRMP of nearly Rs 400 crore.
