Hyderabad-Origin Professor Wasim Hanif Awarded OBE in King's Birthday Honours List

Born and educated in Hyderabad before moving to the United Kingdom in 1995, Prof. Hanif completed his schooling at St George's Grammar School and studied medicine at Gandhi Medical College.

Hyderabad: Prof. Wasim Hanif, a globally recognised diabetes specialist of Hyderabad origin, has been awarded the honour of ‘Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)’ in the King's Birthday Honours List 2026 for his services to diabetes care and health inequalities.

Professor Hanif works with the diabetes and endocrinology unit at the University Hospitals Birmingham and is clinical adviser to Diabetes UK, according to a statement.

Born and educated in Hyderabad before moving to the United Kingdom in 1995, Prof. Hanif completed his schooling at St George's Grammar School and studied medicine at Gandhi Medical College.

Reacting to the honour, Prof. Hanif, according to the statement, said: “Throughout my career, I have been driven by a desire to improve the lives of people living with diabetes and to address the inequalities that continue to affect health outcomes across our society.”

"This recognition reflects the dedication and support of the many colleagues, students, researchers and healthcare professionals I have had the privilege to work alongside."

Prof. Hanif is recognised for his work in diabetes, obesity, ethnicity and health equity. He has advised major institutions including the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Union and the UK Parliament, and has contributed to research and policy initiatives.

He serves as president-elect of the British Medical Association, trustee of Diabetes UK, non-executive director of the British Medical Journal, chair of the Association for the Study of Obesity UK, and trustee of the South Asian Health Foundation.
