Hyderabad: Rajendranagar Special Operations Team (SOT) busted illegal deer meat trade during a raid at Attapur, and arrested one person red-handed while selling 15 kg venison.
Police recovered Rs 3,000 cash from the arrested, Mohammad Irfanuddin, a native of Suleman Nagar. During interrogation, he told the police that he hunted the animal in the forest and brought the meat to the city.
The incident brought to light the menace of poaching. Investigation into the illegal sale of venison revealed that the accused had been hunting deer in Nallamala forest, shifting the meat to Hyderabad from Pebberu in Wanaparthy district and selling the same for Rs 800 a kg in the city.
The police are investigating possible links to a larger illegal wildlife trade network.
The arrested has been handed over to Attapur police. A case has been registered under the provisions of Wildlife (Protection) Act. Police warned of strict action against those engaged in poaching.
