Hyderabad: Family of Five Dies by Suicide

The incident came to light after neighbours knocked on the door of the house but received no response. Venkatamma’s sister, who came to the house, peeped through the window and found them all lying in the room, with some of them on the bed and some on the floor

Hyderabad: A family of four allegedly killed their two-year-old infant and died by suicide at their residence in Mahboobpet Maqta in Miyapur, at around 8.30 am on Thursday. Police suspect the family might have taken the extreme step reportedly due to financial difficulties.

The deceased – Narsimha, 60, his wife Venkatamma, 55, their son-in-law Anil, 38, their daughter Kavitha, 28, and their two-year-old grandson – were all natives of Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) in Karnataka and had moved to the city a year ago for work. Narsimha and Anil worked as labourers at construction sites in the city.

The incident came to light after neighbours knocked on the door of the house but received no response. Venkatamma’s sister, who came to the house, peeped through the window and found them all lying in the room, with some of them on the bed and some on the floor.

With the help of other neighbours, Venkatamma’s sister got the door broken open and found them all dead, wrapped in blankets. She shifted the deceased to Kondapur area hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. The police were informed, who shifted the bodies to the Gandhi mortuary for postmortem examination.

“Poison mixed in food is suspected to be the cause of death. However, doctors have collected viscera samples and will be concluding the cause of death soon after FSL reports are out,” said Miyapur inspector P. Shiva Prasad.

The family is known to be burdened with a few loans from Kalaburagi. Reports also suggested that Anil was looking to move to a new house with his wife and granddaughter.

Neighbours said the family had last met the family at around 11 pm and looked normal, which left most of them clueless as they found them dead the next morning.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Anil’s relative Ashok Uppar said, “We are still unable to believe they died by suicide. They were good with their neighbours and did not have any enemies. We are still clueless about what happened and how it happened.”

Police said they did not find any bodily injuries on any of the deceased. However, there was some vomit found under the bed. The police had collected all the samples, and had recovered several medicines and the mobile phones of the deceased from their possession.

A case was registered under Section 194 of the BNSS and further investigation into the incident is underway.
