Omega Hospital Founder’s Daughter Arrested in Drug Case

Following a tip-off, police intercepted Namrata during a narcotics handover.

Hyderabad: The Raidurgam police on Saturday arrested Dr Chigurupati Namrata, radiologist and former CEO of Omega Hospital, after catching her red-handed while allegedly purchasing cocaine from a courier near a bus stop in Raidurgam. She is the daughter of hospital founder Dr Ch Mohana Vamsy.

According to Raidurgam inspector Ch Venkanna, Dr Namrata was nabbed on Saturday morning while receiving a fresh delivery of 53 grams of cocaine, valued at Rs 5 lakh. Police also arrested Balakrishna Rampyar, 38, the courier who had travelled from Mumbai to deliver the drugs. The police seized the consignment, Rs 10,000 in cash, and two mobile phones from their possession.

Investigations have revealed that Dr Namrata had spent over Rs 70 lakh on cocaine over the past year. She allegedly became dependent after befriending a DJ during visits to a pub in Thane, Maharashtra. Through the DJ, she came in contact with a Mumbai-based drug supplier, Vansh Thakkar, who operated a distribution network across cities.

Dr Namrata reportedly coordinated drug purchases via WhatsApp and allegedly received multiple consignments through Balakrishna, who shuttled between Mumbai and Hyderabad delivering narcotics and collecting payments, according to the police.

Inspector Venkanna stated, “She was purchasing the drug when we caught them. We are now working to trace the rest of the network.”

Police officials believe the drug ring involves several high-profile individuals. A WhatsApp group used to coordinate the drug orders reportedly includes celebrities and children of prominent businessmen. Police are working to identify other members of the group and determine the full scope of the racket.

The main supplier Vansh Thakkar has been named as an accused and is absconding. Police have launched efforts to trace and apprehend him. This case is now being viewed as part of a larger crackdown on elite drug networks operating between Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Dr Namrata, who resides in a gated community in Shaikpet, has been remanded to judicial custody and sent to Chanchalguda jail. Blood samples have been collected to ascertain her drug usage history, and officials await medical reports to decide on the next course of action. Police confirmed that no previous criminal cases have been registered against either Dr Namrata or Balakrishna.

According to an official from the Hospital, Dr Namrata was a qualified radiologist but never practiced. She did a hospital management course in Spain, and was appointed as CEO of Omega Hospital after her return to India. She was not very actively participating in the activities of the hospital, he said.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Omega Hospital founder and Dr Namrata's father, Ch Mohana Vamsy, said “She is an adult,” and declined further comment. He clarified that the hospital’s operations remain unaffected by the incident.

Speaking of the operations and working of the hospital, Dr Vamsy said, "She had resigned as the CEO six months back, and so none of the operations or working style of the hospital would be affected because of this case."

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and investigation is underway, police said.
