Hyderabad Art Week Opens With Four Galleries
Four Hyderabad galleries launched the inaugural Art Week, featuring works by emerging artists, curated exhibitions and interactive sessions on art and creative careers.
Hyderabad Art Week began on Monday as four city galleries came together for a seven‑day programme of exhibitions, workshops, artist interactions and studio visits. The first edition runs until November 1 and aims to introduce contemporary art to a wider audience and encourage visits to galleries across the city.
The initiative was started by four women gallerists — Bhargavi Gundala of Dhi Contemporary, Lakshmi Nambiar of Srishti Art, Rekha Lahoti of Kalakriti Art Gallery and Supraja Rao of Kadari Art Gallery. Each gallery has chosen its own exhibition rather than following a common theme.
Dhi Contemporary is presenting a solo exhibition by Gayatri Danthuri, whose work explores experimental practices. Kadari Art Gallery’s ‘Worlds Within Reach: Artists in Focus’ features young and emerging artists selected through an open call. Kalakriti’s ‘I Know What I Am Doing’, curated by P.S. Jalaja, examines caste, gender and environmental issues. Srishti Art is hosting a solo exhibition by Alpana Vij, who uses found twigs as her medium.
Organisers said the most expansive part of Hyderabad Art Week happens outside the exhibitions. The programme includes workshops on collage‑making, salt crystallisation and natural dyes, along with studio visits, gallery circuits and conversations with artists, collectors and designers.
Monday’s programme featured ‘Beyond the Classroom’, a series of sessions on artistic practice, residencies, portfolio preparation and careers in art, with speakers Lina Vincent, Kirtana Thangavelu, B.V. Suresh and Suresh Jayaram. An exhibition of works by University of Hyderabad fine arts students at Salar Jung Museum was also part of the opening day. Other activities include archival presentations and a curated walkthrough of the RMZ Foundation’s Sculpture Park.
Tourism and Culture minister Jupally Krishna Rao unveiled the event’s logo earlier this month.
