The programme follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direction at the monthly PRAGATI meeting on May 27 to make 50 cities cleaner and achieve 100% cleanliness, covering garbage‑free cities, solid‑waste processing and used‑water management.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad has been selected among 50 cities across 24 states and Union Territories under the Centre’s newly launched PRAGATI‑50 initiative aimed at making the chosen cities completely clean and developing them as models for urban sanitation.
The initiative, launched by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs, covers 76 municipal areas, including all municipal areas in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Kolkata.
The programme follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direction at the monthly PRAGATI meeting on May 27 to make 50 cities cleaner and achieve 100% cleanliness, covering garbage‑free cities, solid‑waste processing and used‑water management.
For Hyderabad, the initiative assumes significance as the city’s municipal administration is now divided among GHMC, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation.
The three civic bodies will therefore be part of the cleanliness push covering the Hyderabad urban area.
The Centre said the selected cities will be expected to go beyond routine sanitation work and demonstrate sustained improvements in visible cleanliness, solid‑waste management, used‑water management, sanitation and citizen participation.
The selected cities include major state capitals as well as tourism and pilgrimage centres.
Tirupati, Warangal, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Puri, Gaya and Udaipur are also part of the initiative.
