Horse Lovers To Move Court Over Abandoned Horses

“After the news came out, our rescue staff and the horse feed have been thrown out and we are denied entry again. We are moving the court in Jabalpur to get custody, so that we can feed and care for the horses,” said Niall Sadh

HYDERABAD: Efforts to feed and treat the abandoned horses, transported from the Hyderabad Race Course, in Jabalpur may have once again been blocked which has prompted rescuers to approach the courts on to seek police custody of the ailing animals.

“After the news came out, our rescue staff and the horse feed have been thrown out and we are denied entry again. We are moving the court in Jabalpur to get custody, so that we can feed and care for the horses,” said Niall Sadh, who has been working with veterinarians and activists to stabilise the condition of the animals.

Strong reactions are coming out from the horse lovers in Hyderabad.

Reaz, secretary of the Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club, said that horse welfare must be the first priority in any equestrian institution. “We have 105 horses here, and not one is unwell. Our horses are like our family and we cannot see a horse in pain,” he said. The club held a committee meeting after learning about the incident and expressed concern at the way the horses had been treated.

Out of the 105 horses at their club, he said around 25 to 28 are privately owned, and that some owners do not visit regularly or take care properly. “But once they are here, they are our responsibility,” he said.

Comparing the situation with the Hyderabad Race Club, he explained that the race club has over 700 horses, of which only about 20 to 30 are owned by the club, mostly for jockey training. The rest belong to different trainers and owners. “Still, the club has a duty to supervise. They have the resources, so they should have known better,” he said.
