HMWSSB to Fine Tankers Rs.5,000 for Water Wastage from November 1

HMWSSB has asked tanker associations to create awareness among their members and cooperate in preventing water wastage.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has announced a fine of Rs.5,000 for water tankers found wasting drinking water during transportation from November 1, 2026.

Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy issued orders to officials on October 24 to prevent water wastage during tanker transportation.

The Water Board found that some tankers were being filled beyond their capacity, while others were operating without lids or with improperly closed lids. This resulted in drinking water spilling onto roads, causing inconvenience to motorists and creating potential safety hazards.

The board has directed officials to ensure that tankers with leaks or missing or improperly closed lids are not allowed to fill water at its filling stations until the defects are rectified.

If a tanker is caught violating the rules for a second time, its registration will be cancelled. Filling station managers and officials have been instructed to inspect tankers before allowing them to fill water and strictly implement the guidelines.

The board has also asked tanker associations to create awareness among their members and cooperate in preventing water wastage. It stressed that tanker owners and drivers must take responsibility for conserving drinking water during transportation.

The Water Board stressed the need to conserve every drop of water and said tanker owners and drivers were responsible for preventing drinking water wastage during transportation. It warned that negligence would not be tolerated and directed officials and tanker operators to strictly follow the guidelines.
