High Court Declines Orders on Regular DGP Appointment

The proposal is presently under consideration before the competent authority for final selection and appointment, Advocate General submitted to the court.

Hyderabad:The Telangana High Court on Monday declined to pass any interim orders in a petition concerning the appointment of the Director General of Police (Head of Police Force) for the state, in view of the ongoing process before the competent authorities.

Advocate General A. Sudarshan Reddy placed on record before the High Court regarding a communication dated April 11, 2026 by the Chief Secretary to the government, to take a call for selection and appointment of one of the empanelled IPS officers as DGP, from the three members list sent by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The empanelled committee recommended a panel of three IPS officers considered suitable for appointment as DGP of Telangana. The proposal is presently under consideration before the competent authority for final selection and appointment, Advocate General submitted to the court.

Recording the submission, the High Court observed that no orders were warranted at this stage and posted the matter to April 27.

During the previous hearing, the Advocate General had informed the court that the panel prepared by the UPSC was received by the state government on March 12 and was under active consideration. He had sought two weeks’ time for a final decision, citing the ongoing Assembly session.

The hearing was in the petition filed by advocate T. Dhangopal Rao, who challenged the state government’s decision to appoint an ad hoc DGP, alleging violation of the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh v. Union of India case.
