Heritage Dept Signs MoU for Conservation of Stepwells in TG

Hyderabad:The heritage department on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Society for Advancement of Human Endeavour (SAHE) to undertake the identification, scientific documentation, conservation, and restoration, of historic step wells, as well as create awareness of the state’s water heritage.
The MoU was signed by department director Prof. Arjun Rao Kuthadi and SAHE representatives Kalpana Ramesh and Annapurna.
Under the partnership, the organisations will identify and geo-tag step wells, prepare a digital inventory, and undertake detailed archaeological, historical, architectural, and technical documentation. They will also prepare conservation plans and detailed project reports (DPRs) for restoration of the step wells.
In addition, the department and SAHE will work together to promote heritage tourism, undertake research and publications, organise awareness campaigns, workshops, and training programme, with active participation of local communities in the conservation, according to a statement.
Prof. Arjun Rao said the MoU is an important step towards conserving step wells through the collective efforts of government departments, experts, academic institutions, voluntary organisations, and local communities, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The programme was attended by deputy directors Dr P. Nagaraju, Dr Ramulu Nayak and Narsing.
