Heavy Rains Swell Musi, Flood Areas

Many residents in Chaderghat and Moosanagar have already evacuated to other areas.

Hyderabad: Heavy rain that lashed Hyderabad on Wednesday had with authorities open more gates of the Himayatsagar reservoir, intensifying flooding in several areas along the Musi River.

The strong outflow from the reservoir pushed water levels above the Amberpet–Moosarambagh bridge, prompting traffic and GHMC authorities to halt movement on the bridge and keep the area under close watch.

Neighbourhoods close to the Musi, including Chaderghat, Chudi Bazaar, Moosarambagh, Bapu Ghat, Narayanguda, Begum Bazaar and Gandhinagar, are experiencing water entering streets and low-lying houses.

The GHMC issued alerts to residents of low-lying areas in Shankar Nagar, Padmanagar, Veenayaka Veedhi, Chaderghat and Moosa Nagar in the Malakpet circle, urging them to stay indoors or shift to safer locations.

Many residents in Chaderghat and Moosanagar have already evacuated to other areas. The Musi River Front Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) had earlier demolished several houses in these neighbourhoods for its riverfront rejuvenation programme.

Staff from HYDRAA’s Disaster Response Force and Monsoon Emergency Teams, along with traffic police and municipal staff, are clearing debris and assisting evacuations. HYDRAA officials said the situation is being closely monitored and all necessary assistance will be provided to affected residents.
