Over 15,000 children hit; govt to set up temporary centres in schools, offices

Hyderabad: Heavy rain across Telangana has damaged 579 anganwadi centres in 20 districts, with the highest number of cases reported from Nirmal, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Kamareddy, Jogulamba-Gadwal, Hanamkonda, Medak, Wanaparthy, KB Asifabad and Mulugu.
According to an official report, seven centres require complete renovation due to extensive structural damage — six in KB Asifabad and one in Medak. Most other centres reported leaking roofs, cracked walls, damaged floors, and weakened basements.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari ‘Seethakka’ Anasuya, after reviewing the damage report, directed officials to restore services by opening temporary anganwadi centres in nearby government schools or offices. She directed that these arrangements be in place by Monday to ensure continuity of services.
About 15,000 children aged between three and six years are enrolled in the affected centres. Of the 579 damaged centres, 438 operate from government-owned buildings and 141 from rent-free premises. Repair costs are estimated at Rs 14 crore for government-owned buildings and Rs 3 crore for rent-free centres.
In Suryapet, rainwater spoiled food stocks stored in three anganwadi centres. The loss included three quintals of rice, 23 kg of dal, and 80 kg of balamrutham, a nutritional mix of wheat, chana dal, milk powder, oil, and sugar.
