Heavy Rain Disrupts Roads And Bridges In Hyderabad City

The Rajendranagar-Kismatpur stretch has faced similar problems for years during heavy rain: Water from Himayatsagar flows over the road, blocking traffic and forcing vehicles to take longer routes.

Hyderabad: The exit at the Outer Ring Road’s toll point near Rajendranagar was flooded with water from the Himayatsagar on Tuesday. It was closed for traffic in the morning, and reopened it past 1.30 pm.

The Rajendranagar-Kismatpur stretch has faced similar problems for years during heavy rain: Water from Himayatsagar flows over the road, blocking traffic and forcing vehicles to take longer routes.

At 11.30 am, water at the Himayatsagar stood at 1,761.55 feet, two feet shy of its full tank level of 1,763.5 feet. Holding 2.529 tmc ft of water, it is receiving 1,000 cusecs of water. Two gates were opened to release excess water.

The Osmansagar, too, began receiving more inflows, and the water level stood at 1,784.4 feet, still six feet from its FTL of 1,790 feet, and had an inflow of 1,700 cusecs of water.

The Moosarambagh-Amberpet bridge was closed to traffic after water in the Musi rose to nearly the height of the structure. The bridge has been a major choke point during every monsoon season, where water flows over the bridge and becomes unsafe for vehicles to use it.

Mohd. Irshad, a local store owner, said. “With each passing year, the bridge becomes more and more scary to be put to use. It is in very bad condition, but this is the only major point for people to cross from Malakpet towards Amberpet and vice versa.”

Traffic police and GHMC quickly blocked the bridge and diverted vehicles through other routes. Large amounts of water hyacinth had also gathered near the bridge, slowing water flow. GHMC teams were deployed to remove the plants.

Drainage water flowed on Old City's Jiyaguda roads and streets from a drainage manhole. Vehicles and pedestrians faced difficulties while passing through ankle-deep water. HYDRAA's DRF and MET staffers cleared the waterlogging from the roads.
