Ryots hopeful of saving their crops as irrigation projects get filled
Adilabad:The heavy rain on Wednesday brought a sigh of relief to farmers and gave them confidence that their standing crops of cotton, redgram and soya would survive.
Normal life was affected with heavy downpour while rivulets and streams had copious flows in the Adilabad district.
A fear is that the standing crops may be affected if the heavy rain continues for a few more days and floodwater inundates fields where crops are in the sprouting stage.
As streams and rivulets received rainwater, this may increase the groundwater level, after a prolonged dry spell.
The Sripada Yellampalli irrigation project has received 50000 cusecs of floodwater from streams and rivulets upstream following the heavy rain in Nirmal district.
Road connectivity is affected in a few villages since lower-level bridges are overflowing with floodwater following the heavy rain in Lingapur and Sirpur ( U) mandals of the Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. In some places, the trees were uprooted.
The gram panchayat in Gundi has alerted the villagers following the heavy rain, and Gundi Vagu was flooded. It has asked the villagers not to cross the stream, remain in their houses and not to venture outside.
Traffic was affected near Jannaram with a heavy tree falling at Dongapalli village on the Nirmal - Mancherial Road.
Reports said residents Atram Hanumnathu and his wife suffered injuries when their hut collapsed in the rain at Alugama village in Kotapalli mandal. The injured were shifted to the government hospital in Chennur.
Road connectivity to 14 villages was affected, with the Gantala Bheemanna Vagu overflowing in Tandur mandal Road connectivity was affected in six villages with Lothuvagu overflowing in Kotapalli mandal.
Notably, some 32,000 tonnes of coal production was affected, as also the excavation of 1.80 lakh cubic meters of overburden in the opencast mines in Mandamarri, Srirampur and Bellampalli divisions in the Bellampalli region of the Singareni. The authorities started efforts to remove the rainwater.
Irrigation projects are receiving rainwater following the heavy rain upstream. The Kadam project is receiving inflows, and its level increased by the hour. Some 22,500 cusecs of water was received.The water level in the project was at 686,700 feet against its FRL of 700 feet. The Pochera and Kutnala waterfalls received heavy flows.
The SRSP has recorded an instant inflow of 3500 cusecs and the outflow was 751 cusecs by the evening. The project’s water level is 1065 .40 feet against 1075.00 feet last year.
The district authorities of Nirmal, Mancherial, Komaram Bheem Asifabad and Adilabad districts are monitoring the flood situation and taking steps to avert mishaps.
