Heavy Inflows Refill HYDRAA-Restored Uppal Nalla Cheruvu

Hyderabad: The Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal restored by HYDRAA has come alive with abundant rainwater following the recent heavy rains in Hyderabad.
The lake, once choked with plastic waste and reduced to a polluted water body, is now receiving substantial flood inflows as a result of the comprehensive restoration works undertaken by HYDRAA.
As part of the rejuvenation project, the HYDRAA developed an integrated drainage system to ensure that floodwaters from the surrounding catchment flow into the lake, while sewage is diverted through a separate bypass channel. This intervention has enabled floodwaters to safely enter the lake, preventing inundation in the upstream localities during recent spells of heavy rainfall.
More than 10 acres of encroachments were removed, restoring the lake's extent to nearly 70 acres. The HYDRAA is carrying out the comprehensive development of the lake at an estimated cost of Rs.20 crore.
Improved Inlets and Outlet
To strengthen the lake's hydrology, the HYDRAA developed two inlets to channel floodwaters from Nacharam lake and the surrounding areas into Uppal Nalla Cheruvu. An improved outlet has also been constructed to facilitate the smooth discharge of surplus water into the Musi River after the lake reaches full capacity.
Beyond water conservation, the project aims to transform the lake into a vibrant public space. The development includes a walking track, a strengthened main bund, a children's play area, an open gym, and landscaped recreational spaces, creating an ideal destination for families and visitors.
Uppal Nalla Cheruvu is one of the key lakes being developed under HYDRAA's first phase of lake restoration. With three restored lakes already dedicated to the public, Uppal Nalla Cheruvu is set to become another major urban water asset and an attractive recreational destination for Hyderabad in the near future.
