Heatwave Conditions Likely in North Telangana Districts This Week

The IMD cautioned that high temperatures could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among infants, elderly persons and those with chronic diseases

Hyderabad: North Telangana, where the mercury has crossed the 45ºC mark, is expected to get hotter over the next five days, with maximum temperature expected to rise by 2°C to 3°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad.

Hyderabad is likely to record maximum temperature between 40°C and 41°C over the next 48 hours. The IMD cautioned that high temperatures could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among infants, elderly persons and those with chronic diseases.

Following the forecast, the government urged people to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the summer heat by drinking sufficient water. They recommended consuming Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) or homemade drinks such as lemon water, buttermilk and fruit juices. The advisory cautioned against consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated drinks and oily or spicy foods during the heatwave period.

People have been urged to remain indoors as far as possible, particularly between 12 noon and 3 pm, and to keep homes well ventilated while limiting outdoor activity to early mornings or evenings.

People travelling outdoors were asked to carry drinking water and avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Residents were advised to wear thin, loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and cover their heads with umbrellas, caps, hats or towels while outdoors. Wearing footwear outside was also recommended.

The IMD issued yellow warnings for isolated pockets of Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal and Jagtial districts on Sunday. Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in northern districts, including Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Nizamabad and Khammam, till May 21.

The department said dry weather is likely to set in across the state from May 18, following isolated light to moderate rain or thundershowers on Sunday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal districts.

Director of health Dr B. Ravinder Nayak said the government has made elaborate arrangements, including special beds, IV fluids, essential medicines and ORS sachets at public health facilities across the state to manage heat-related emergencies.
