Heat and Storms Grip Telangana as Weather Turns Unpredictable

Weather experts say the erratic weather was driven by localised heating and moisture dynamics

Hyderabad: The IMD on Saturday issued alerts for both high temperatures and thunderstorms at different parts of the state. While northern districts reeled under intense heat, thunderstorms and hailstorms were forecast for least 16 districts on Sunday.

According to the IMD, the formation of cumulonimbus clouds — towering clouds with a flat base at a low attitude — caused sudden weather shifts post-afternoon. After recording high temperatures in the first half of the day, many areas — including Hyderabad — began experiencing heavy rain, gusty winds, and hailstorms in the evening.

The Telangana Development Planning Society said the max temperature in most GHMC circles crossed the 40°C mark on Friday. Malakpet, Jubilee Hills, and Secunderabad each recorded 40.6°C. Same period last year, when several areas, including Uppal and Kapra, recorded highs above 42°C.

Jagtial, Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, and Nirmal — all in north Telangana — recorded temperatures around the 43.8°C mark.

For Easter Sunday, April 20, the IMD has forecast thunderstorm activity in 16 districts, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Nalgonda, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Suryapet. Sudden downpours and strong winds are expected to affect both urban and rural regions.

Weather experts say the erratic weather was driven by localised heating and moisture dynamics. “This fluctuation is typical of April pre-monsoon behaviour,” a senior IMD official explained, “but what we’re now seeing is a rise in intensity and unpredictability.” The risk of lightning strikes, falling tree branches, and waterlogging remains high in storm-prone areas. With the possibility of more rain in the next 48 hours, the state’s agriculture and power departments are also on standby for emergencies.
