KARIMNAGAR: Police commissioner Goush Alam on Friday confirmed the arrest of five persons, including a head constable and a retired administrative officer, in connection with a `1.4 crore salary fraud detected within the City Police Office (CPO), Karimnagar.
The prime accused, head constable Neelam Rammohan, previously worked in the pay section of the CPO and is currently posted at Chigurumamidi police station. He allegedly misused the employee IDs of three deceased constables — Ch. Ravinder, K. Gangaswamy and K. Ravi — to divert salary funds.
According to the investigation, the accused opened fraudulent bank accounts in the names of three private individuals — Lavudia Ravi, Chukka Gangaraju and Shankar Namatabab — in HDFC Bank branches at Bhagat Nagar and Bommakal. Salaries were routed into these accounts between June 2022 and March 2026, and were operated using the accused’s mobile number and email ID.
Police said the fraud also involved securing personal loans against the diverted salary accounts, with EMIs being serviced from the misappropriated funds.
The scam came to light after a newly posted employee in the pay section noticed discrepancies in salary expenditure and alerted senior officials.
The role of the sub-treasury office is also under investigation for alleged lapses in verification of salary bills over several years.
The commissioner said strict action would be taken against all those involved, reiterating a zero-tolerance policy on corruption.
Police seized 341.1 grams of gold ornaments and `50,000 cash from the main accused, while a mobile phone and ?18,000 cash were recovered from the retired administrative officer Y.V. Muni Ramaiah.
All five accused have been remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is continuing.
