Harish Demands Action Over Botched Caesareans at Banswada Hospital
Former health minister seeks probe and action after women and newborns reportedly fell ill
Hyderabad: Former health minister and senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao on Monday slammed the Congress government for “criminal negligence” over the condition of women who fell critically ill after surgeries at the Government Mother and Child Hospital in Banswada last week.
Speaking to reporters after meeting women who underwent Caesarean sections and were admitted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) after developing complications, Harish Rao said 10 women had undergone childbirth surgeries at the Banswada hospital on July 13, and developed infections. Of them, five women were undergoing treatment at NIms and three of them were in the ICU in a critical condition, he said.
There was utter disregard for safety and doctors at the Banswada hospital continued to perform C-setions in the same operation theatre in spite of some of the women developing conditions such as vomiting, diarrhoea and fever, he said.
Expressing concern that the infections acquired by the mothers were transmitted to the newborns through breastfeeding, forcing the babies to be admitted to Niloufer hospital for treatment.
Demanding a high-level inquiry into the negligence that resulted in the women falling sick, and their babies too acquiring infections, Harish Rao sought action against those responsible for the events. He also demanded compensation to the affected families, and said the government must provide the victims quality healthcare until their recovery.
