Graveyard with Sewage Due to Damaged Wall, Locals Demand Action

Hyderabad: Sewage water from a nearby municipal dumping yard has reportedly entered the Akbariguda Muslim graveyard in Macha Bolaram through a damaged rear boundary wall. Residents living near the place and graveyard committee members say the incident has not only desecrated the burial ground but also exposed the area to health risks and distress to grieving families visiting the site.

According to locals, the wall was in a deteriorated condition and had been repeatedly brought to the attention of authorities, but no repairs were made. With rains exacerbating the situation, untreated water flowed into the premises, leaving parts of the graveyard waterlogged and foul-smelling.

Graveyard committee members said the dumping yard, situated uncomfortably close to the burial ground, has been a source of repeated complaints due to its unscientific waste management and frequent overflow of waste water. “After the removal of a Hindu cremation site nearby, we’re now seeing similar neglect towards our graveyard. This is not just a place of burial; for us, it is sacred ground that we consider part of our homes,” said one committee member Mohd Irfanuddin, during the protest.

Locals warned of intensified agitation if municipal officials do not act promptly to redirect the sewage water, restore the compound wall, and ensure that no future dumping happens in the vicinity. Several families who regularly visit the site for prayers also demanded that sanitation teams be sent immediately to disinfect the area and restore dignity to the resting place of their loved ones.

The community urged the cantonment board and health officials to conduct an inspection and initiate immediate remedial measures. At the time of reporting, no official had visited the site, and residents continue to block the entry point of the sewage channel to prevent further contamination.
