WARANGAL/KARIMNAGAR: The practice of drying paddy and maize on roads and highways has emerged as a major safety hazard in erstwhile Warangal and Karimnagar districts, with reports of frequent accidents involving motorists.
Police and local residents said several stretches, particularly during the ongoing harvest season, have become risky due to loose grain spread across carriageways, leading to skidding incidents, especially at night.
In Warangal region, the Narsampet–Mulugu national highway and roads in Kesamudram, Dornakal and Gudur in Mahabubabad district have been affected. In Jangaon district, stretches in Palakurthi mandal, including areas between Kasturba School and the bus stand, and from Valmidi Cross to the government school on Dardepalli road, have also been impacted.
In Karimnagar region, similar conditions prevail on roads connecting Huzurabad–Jammikunta and Jammikunta–Veenavanka, with incidents also reported from Rajanna Sircilla, Jagtial and Peddapalli districts.
A recent incident was reported in Chennaraopet mandal, where Pujari Venkanna of Suripalli sustained serious injuries after his motorcycle skidded on maize spread on the road.
Police said awareness drives and penalties have been imposed to curb the practice, but it continues. Farmers said they resort to drying produce on roads due to lack of designated drying platforms and ease of transport from paved surfaces.
Residents have urged the administration to enforce safety measures and provide alternative drying facilities to prevent further accidents.
