Govt Approves GHMC's Storm Water Master Plan for Telangana Core Urban Region
The initiative will be supported by a geo-referenced database of the storm water drainage (SWD) system and advanced hydraulic and hydrologic modeling.

Hyderabad: The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department has accorded permission to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to proceed with the development of a comprehensive Storm Water Master Plan for the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR). This region, comprising GHMC and its surrounding rural and urban areas, plays a vital role as an economic, social, and cultural hub, housing major industries, IT corridors, and commercial centres that significantly contribute to the state’s GDP.
Given the region’s high population density and complex hydrological systems including the Musi River, Hussain Sagar, and Osman Sagar urban flooding has become a persistent challenge. The Master Plan aims to create a robust and efficient storm water drainage system to reduce flood risk, protect public health, and promote sustainable urban development.
Key objectives of the plan include:
Flood prevention through enhanced drainage infrastructure
Improved water quality via pollution control
Cost-effective prioritisation of storm water projects
Promotion of green infrastructure, such as rain gardens
The initiative will be supported by a geo-referenced database of the storm water drainage (SWD) system and advanced hydraulic and hydrologic modeling.
The government has approved GHMC’s proposal to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) from eligible consultants to prepare the Master Plan. The GHMC Commissioner has been directed to obtain all necessary approvals before proceeding with the tendering process.
