Floodwaters rise in Bhupalpally; villages evacuated, NDRF on standby

Warangal: Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Telangana has caused the Godavari and Pranahita rivers at Kaleshwaram to flow fiercely at 12.670 metres, above the first warning level of 12.120 metres. The river is approaching the danger level of 13.460 metres in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. On Wednesday, floodwaters submerged the Jnana Deepalu at the Pushkar Ghats, forcing officials to evacuate shops belonging to small traders along the river.
At the Medigadda (Lakshmi) Barrage, a key part of the Kaleshwaram project, all 85 gates have been lifted to release water downstream. The barrage is currently in free-flow condition, with inflow and outflow recorded at 9,02,550 cusecs.
District collector Rahul Sharma and police superintendent Kiran Khare inspected the flood situation at the Godavari and Saraswati Ghats. Collector Sharma said the first flood warning was issued based on a Central Water Commission (CWC) report and directed revenue, police, and other departments to work in coordination to protect people living in villages along the river’s catchment area. He instructed officials to alert residents of riverbank villages, move people from low-lying areas to safe rehabilitation centres, and keep NDRF and SDRF teams on standby for emergencies.
SP Kiran Khare assured that the police are fully prepared for any emergency and urged people to call 100 for immediate assistance. He stressed the importance of continuous monitoring and timely communication of flood updates to prevent loss of life.
The officials also inspected the flooded causeway leading to Chandrupalli, which has cut off access to the village. Barricades were erected to prevent people from attempting to cross until waters recede.
Collector Rahul Sharma appealed to the public to take strict precautions under the current flood conditions. He advised against visiting riverbanks or travelling through floodwaters, urged families to keep children and the elderly safe, and instructed residents to follow official guidelines and move to government-established rehabilitation centres when necessary.
