Gig Workers May Go on Strike From Aug. 8

Four lakh app-based drivers and delivery workers may join a protest for fair pay and security

Hyderabad: Gig and platform workers’ unions in Telangana have called for an indefinite strike from August 8, following a flash protest held last Wednesday. The strike could lead to app-based mobility and delivery services getting disrupted.

Union representatives said nearly four lakh people offering app-based mobility and delivery services are expected to go off the roads if the strike proceeds. The agitation includes drivers and delivery personnel associated with multiple digital platforms.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union has sought immediate dialogue with the government and platform companies, pressing for measures to ensure fair earnings, social security, transparent policies, and improved working conditions.

Key demands include the notification of a minimum base fare and revision of per-kilometre and per-minute charges in consultation with driver unions. The unions have also called for algorithm transparency, seeking disclosure of fare calculations, incentives, penalties, and account deactivation policies.

They have demanded a cap on aggregator commissions, alleging that high platform charges are reducing driver incomes. The unions also sought mandatory social security measures, including health and accident insurance, pension, maternity benefits, and access to Welfare Board schemes.

The unions further called for action against unauthorised vendors and commercial operations involving vehicles from other states, stating that such practices adversely affect local workers. They also urged the government to notify and implement the Gig and Platform Workers Rules and constitute a Welfare Board without delay.

Stating that the strike would proceed if demands remain unresolved, the unions said representatives of app-based cab drivers, auto drivers, goods transport operators, and delivery workers from platforms including Ola, Uber, Rapido, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Blinkit would participate.
