GHMC to Have 300 Wards, Gazette Soon

The government plans to hold a special debate on the GHMC expansion and ward delimitation during the forthcoming winter session of the Legislative Assembly

Hyderabad: The state government is likely to issue a gazette notification on Wednesday approving the final draft report on the delimitation of 300 wards within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. With this move, the number of GHMC wards will be doubled from the existing 150 to 300 following the merger of seven municipal corporations and 20 municipalities.

Official sources said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday gave his approval to the final draft submitted by GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan, after a detailed review of objections and suggestions received from the public and political parties. The draft was placed before the government on Monday after incorporating feedback gathered during the consultation process.

Sources added that the government plans to hold a special debate on the GHMC expansion and ward delimitation during the forthcoming winter session of the Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin on December 29. The Chief Minister is keen to solicit the views of all political parties on the future course of action, including whether the expanded GHMC should continue as a single civic body with 300 wards or be bifurcated into three separate municipal corporations.

The current GHMC council’s tenure is due to end on February 10, 2026, and the government intends to conduct elections once the term expires. A final decision is expected on whether elections will be held for a unified GHMC with 300 wards or for three corporations following a division of the existing structure.

The final delimitation exercise followed the issuance of a preliminary draft notification on December 9. Officials said a total of 5,945 representations were received from citizens and political parties, while opinions expressed during a special GHMC council meeting were also taken into account. A technical committee examined the submissions and accepted several proposals, including changes to ward names based on well-known geographical features and revisions to boundaries aligned with natural demarcations.

As part of the process, nearly 40 wards were renamed and boundaries of several others modified, sources added. Long-established names such as Bagh Amberpet, Vanasthalipuram and Monda Market were retained or restored, while some newly proposed names like DD Colony were altered following public feedback.

Officials explained that the delimitation was carried out through a scientific approach to ensure equitable population distribution across wards, addressing long-standing disparities in representation. Natural features such as roads, drains and water bodies were used to define boundaries, which is expected to improve service delivery and administrative efficiency. The restructuring is also aimed at enabling realistic infrastructure planning based on population density, road networks, drainage capacity, water supply and housing requirements.

With the merger of 27 urban local bodies, GHMC’s jurisdiction has expanded to nearly 2,000 square kilometres, extending up to the Outer Ring Road. Official sources said the integration would ensure uniform civic services in the merged areas and facilitate coordinated development of IT corridors, airport zones and ORR regions, paving the way for more sustainable and planned urban growth in Hyderabad.
