GHMC Finds Sweet Shops Dirty Ahead of Diwali

A total of 43 sweet shops were inspected across the city in the special drive

Hyderabad: Ahead of Diwali, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) launched a special inspection drive on Wednesday, covering 43 sweet shops across the city.

The most common violations observed included a lack of pest control, untested water used in food preparation, broken flooring in tiffin sections, and absence of medical records for workers. Inspectors also found fly infestations in display areas, unclean ovens, food handlers without hairnets or gloves, and open dustbins near food displays. The violations varied from shop to shop.

These checks were conducted in addition to the GHMC’s routine weekly inspections carried out by the corporation’s Food Safety Wing. Notices were issued to erring establishments, directing them to rectify the defects immediately, while major violations will be referred to Adjudication Officers for further action.

The GHMC also instructed food business operators to maintain hygiene standards, ensure clean kitchen premises, and properly label food items with the date of preparation and shelf life clearly mentioned.
