GHMC Faces Flak for Poor Roads

People said GHMC dug up roads for repair and pipeline works across the city but left them unfinished. In areas like Lakdikapul, Ameenpur, Masab Tank and Madhapur, open pits and uneven surfaces have turned into dangers for pedestrians and motorists.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad residents are lashing out at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for failing to complete road repairs and maintenance before the onset of heavy rains, accusing the civic body of negligence that is making commuting hazardous.

People said GHMC dug up roads for repair and pipeline works across the city but left them unfinished. In areas like Lakdikapul, Ameenpur, Masab Tank and Madhapur, open pits and uneven surfaces have turned into dangers for pedestrians and motorists.

In Ameenpur, residents complained of severe road damage due to incomplete works. “Since February, we have been asking officials to repair the roads. They did not act. Two weeks ago, they started repairs but abandoned them once the rains began. Now the roads are in even worse condition,” said Murali, a resident of Ameenpur’s Ailapur.

In Malakpet, a stretch towards Chanchalguda was damaged by the rains. “Someone complained about the potholes, so GHMC staff filled them with sand and cement. Less than two hours later, the cement had spread, leaving the potholes open and the road covered in soil and cement,” said Mohd. Khalid, a local shopkeeper.

Even key stretches are neglected. At Lakdikapul, the Niloufer Hospital road remains dug up, forcing vehicles to navigate deep potholes and cavities, which the rains have worsened. In several instances, city traffic police have stepped in to do GHMC’s job, filling potholes with cement, sand, stones and gravel in Madhapur, Serilingampally and Nizampet.

People are questioning why the civic body cannot coordinate with other departments to ensure roads are restored immediately after being dug. “Every year it’s the same story. Roads are dug up right before the rains and never repaired on time. We pay taxes for better infrastructure, not to suffer like this,” Murali said.
