Ganja Smugglers Ram Car into Excise Team in Nizamabad, Woman Cop Critical

Two ganja smugglers from Nirmal district arrested; 2 kg of dry ganja seized after midnight chase.

Nizamabad: Ganja smugglers allegedly attacked a woman constable of the Prohibition and Excise Department while trying to flee during a vehicle check in Nizamabad district on Friday night. The constable, Soumya, 23, sustained serious injuries after being hit by a speeding car near Madhavanagar and was now out of danger.

Acting on a tip-off, a prohibition and excise team led by Nizamabad circle inspector Swapna proceeded in two vehicles to Madhavanagar village on the Nizamabad-Hyderabad road to intercept the smugglers transporting dry ganja. On noticing the excise team, the smugglers tried to escape.
During the operation, constable Soumya tried to stop the vehicle but was hit by the smugglers’ car. She was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Nizamabad, where her condition was initially reported to be serious.
Following the incident, excise staff staged a dharna in Nizamabad on Saturday, demanding justice for the injured constable. The protesters alleged that CI Swapna was responsible for the incident and demanded action against her.
Prohibition and excise deputy commissioner Swamy Reddy and district excise superintendent Malla Reddy met the agitating staff and assured them of support to the injured constable. They also said appropriate action would be initiated in connection with the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Swamy Reddy said the matter would be brought to the notice of higher authorities. He added that Soumya’s condition was now out of danger and that two of the four accused involved in the smuggling attempt had been taken into custody. Efforts were on to apprehend the remaining accused, he said.
The excise department, he added, was intensifying measures to curb ganja smuggling in Nizamabad district.
