Gandhi Hosp Doctors Perform Rare Surgery
Despite the extreme risks, a multidisciplinary team proceeded with surgery: Reports

HYDERABAD: Doctors at Gandhi Hospital have successfully performed a rare and highly complex surgery on a 41‑year‑old woman, saving her life after she was diagnosed with an advanced form of kidney cancer. The patient was admitted with mild abdominal pain. Scans revealed a large tumour in the kidney, and further investigations showed it had extended into the inferior vena cava (IVC), the body’s major blood vessel. Doctors said the condition represented a life‑threatening stage of cancer.
Despite the extreme risks, a multidisciplinary team proceeded with surgery. They performed a right radical nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney, followed by an IVC thrombectomy to extract the tumour from the blood vessel. The IVC was then repaired and reconstructed.
Urology department head Dr G. Ravichander said the patient has recovered well and was ready for discharge. He described the procedure as one of the most challenging surgeries, noting that even a minor error could have proved fatal. He credited the support of the cardio-thoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) department and the anaesthesia team as invaluable to the success of the operation.
