Hyderabad: Oil marketing companies increased petrol and diesel prices by 87-91 paise per litre on Saturday, the third increase in less than 10 days. The cumulative increase in retail fuel rates stood at nearly Rs 5 a litre.
In Telangana, petrol prices rose by 97 paise from ₹111.77 to ₹112.74 per litre, while diesel increased 99 paise from ₹99.89 to ₹100.88 per litre. Diesel prices in Telangana crossed the ₹100 mark on Saturday.
Petrol and diesel prices were increased by `3 per litre each on May 15 and 90 paise a litre on May 19. Alongside, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices were raised by `1 per kg, marking the third increase in recent days and taking the cumulative hike to Rs 4 per kg.
Telangana records an average daily consumption of 5,883 kilolitres of petrol and 7,348 kilolitres of diesel.
The hike in fuel prices is expected to impact around 4.2 lakh gig and platform workers, besides the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (TGRTC), which consumes about 6 lakh litres of diesel.
Representatives of gig and platform workers said the hike would add to their operational burden. “This will cause more inconvenience. Each vehicle consumes at least two to 20 litres of fuel a day, and customers are declining bookings due to the increased rates,” they said.
The increase follows a rise in crude oil prices in the international market amid the West Asian conflict, which has affected supply and prompted periodic revisions by oil marketing companies to align with global pricing.
The fuel price increases come amid broader efforts by the government to contain India's oil import bill and reduce fuel consumption.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last week, urged citizens and government departments to conserve fuel, encourage remote working and reduce non-essential travel as elevated energy prices pressure foreign exchange reserves and threaten to widen the current account deficit.
Several state governments have already directed departments to curb travel and reduce office attendance. Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices have also risen by Rs 3 per kg in two instalments within this period.
