The ongoing Bichkunda Municipality elections in the Jukkal Assembly constituency of Kamareddy district have taken a remarkable and inspiring turn with the nomination of Gone Hanmavva, a woman from an extremely poor Dalit family, as the Congress Party candidate for Ward No. 1.
The decision to field Ms. Hanmavva was taken by Jukkal MLA Thota Laxmikantha Rao, and it has created a strong wave of positive sentiment across Bichkunda’s political and social circles. This bold step has been widely welcomed as a powerful message of social justice, empowerment of the marginalized, and genuine grassroots leadership.
Hanmavva’s journey is one of struggle, dignity, and perseverance. She hails from a deeply underprivileged background and has faced severe financial hardships throughout her life. Yet, she has stood firm with the Congress Party, continuing the legacy of her late husband Gone Gangaram, a senior Congress worker who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to serving the party and the people of Bichkunda before his recent passing. In recognition of this lifelong service and sacrifice, the Congress Party chose to honor the family by giving a B-Form to Hanmavva, allowing her to contest the election.
Despite having no financial capacity even to meet basic nomination expenses, Hanmavva is today at the center of a people-driven campaign. Touched by her sincerity and simplicity, and inspired by her life of hardship, the people of Bichkunda have come forward in large numbers to support her. During door-to-door campaigning, residents are warmly welcoming her, seeing in her a true representative of their own struggles and aspirations.
MLA Thota Laxmikantha Rao has personally taken responsibility to support her campaign in every possible way, ensuring that poverty does not become a barrier to democratic participation. His commitment to empowering the poor and the underprivileged is also reflected in the party’s decision to field seven women candidates across twelve wards in Bichkunda, including giving an opportunity to a woman even in the SC General category.
Speaking on the occasion, Thota Laxmikantha Rao said, “My mission is to bring the poor and the marginalised into positions of dignity and leadership. Gone Hanmavva represents thousands of such families whose voices have never been heard. Through her, we want to bring real people’s governance to Bichkunda.”
He appealed to the voters of Bichkunda to bless Gone Hanmavva with a massive mandate by voting for the Congress Party’s Hand symbol, and to ensure that a sincere, grassroots worker who has lived the pain of poverty is elected to serve the people with honesty and compassion.
The candidature of Gone Hanmavva has now become a symbol of hope — a powerful reminder that democracy truly belongs to the poorest of the poor when given a fair chance to lead.
