Hyderabad:A hotel management graduate’s dream of working in a luxury hotel abroad turned into a traumatic experience as he was asked to work as a labourer once he landed in Malaysia. After facing lots of difficulties, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-I, Hyderabad, directed that he be paid a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the loss he suffered due to a misleading overseas placement.
Ch.J. Raghava Reddy had completed his diploma in a Chennai institute and was offered a two-year placement in Malaysia. He paid Rs 2.5 lakh through Opsis Consultancy after being promised a job in a five-star hotel. Upon arriving in Malaysia in December 2023, his passport was taken and he was told to accept menial jobs as a cleaner or laborer.
When he argued, he was shuffled between low-paying jobs and was asked to pay more for visa renewals. After struggling for months, he returned home in March 2024 and approached the consumer commission.
The commission found that Opsis Consultancy had misled the victim and failed to respond to notices or defend itself during the case. The complaint against the Chennai institute, which was also accused, was dismissed, as there was no proof of direct involvement in the placement process. The commission said that the institute was found to have only facilitated contact and did not directly offer the job abroad.
While Raghava Reddy had asked for ₹10 lakh in compensation, the commission granted Rs 4 lakh, stating the amount was fair considering the agony he went through.
