Former Hyderabad Mayor Alampally Passes Away

Pochayya served as the mayor of Hyderabad from 1989 to 1991 when the city was governed by the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: Alampalli Pochayya, 76, former mayor of Hyderabad and a senior Dalit leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party, passed away on October 4. He suffered from a lung infection and was recently admitted to a hospital.

Pochayya served as the mayor of Hyderabad from 1989 to 1991 when the city was governed by the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad. Elected from the Jangammet division, he was one among the three Dalit leaders, who were elected as mayor between 1986 to 1991.

Pochayya was recognised as a pivotal senior Dalit leader within the MIM. He rendered political and social services for a long period alongside the Majlis party founder Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi.

Upon learning of his death, several MIM leaders, including Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali, visited his residence to offer condolences to his family members.

A senior AIMIM leader said Pochayya was the fifth mayor during the 1986-1991 period, and was popular. He used to be regular till three months ago. He said he was elected when the party emerged as the single largest in the 100-member MCH after the elections and won 38 seats.
