Miscreants Open Fire Near SBI Main Branch in Hyderabad’s Koti, ₹6 Lakh Looted
Unidentified assailants allegedly fired gunshots near the SBI main branch ATM on Bank Street before escaping with cash.

Hyderabad: Two persons shot at a cloth merchant who had gone to an ATM at Koti to deposit cash, and fled on his bike with his bag containing ₹6 lakh, early on Friday. The victim, Abdul Rinshad, was taken to the Osmania General Hospital with bullet injuries to his leg and is said to be in a stable condition.
Police said Rinshad, from Kerala, used to regularly deposit cash at the ATM, and may have been tracked by the duo. Taking serious note of the incident, police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said special crime teams had been formed to track the accused who were last seen walking towards the Kacheguda crossroads.
The incident took place at about 7.05 am. The accused, believed to be between 26 and 32 years of age, appeared to be waiting for Rinshad at a TSRTC bus stand right beside the ATM centre.
When Rinshad reached the ATM, one of the assailants, seen in CCTV images to be wearing a light cream colour shirt, walked over and confirmed that the target was carrying a bag. He was then seen signalling to this associate, wearing a white and black checked shirt, who walked over and joined him.
The two spoke briefly and appeared to have grabbed Rinshad’s bag. When he resisted, the second assailant was seen in CCTV images drawing a weapon and opening two rounds of fire.
The first round missed the target but the second hit Rinshed on his right knee. The first assailant was seen grabbing Rinshad’s bike keys, starting the vehicle and riding away along with his associate who was seen holding the black handbag containing the cash in his left hand and the firearm in his right.
The duo fled towards the Women’s University circle, leaving the injured victim bleeding.
According to a statement by police commissioner Sajjanar. The suspects drove towards the Chaderghat signal and proceeded to Nimboliadda, Kacheguda. They changed their clothes and escaped on foot towards Kacheguda crossroads. Sources said they could have travelled towards Khairatabad.
“We had just completed the night shift when we received a Dial 100 call,” an official with the Rakshak Patrol said. Two units were immediately deployed to the site. They helped secure the scene, take the injured to hospital and alert Rinshad’s family members.
Special teams of the tri-commissionerate police, formed after the incident, were going through CCTV footage to try and trace the duo.
“We strongly suspect that the assailants are from other states and habitual offenders. We believe they had tracked Rinshad and had recced the site,” a police officer said. “We were told by the victim's family members and associates that he used to go thrice a week to the same ATM to deposit money.”
Police were securing CCTV footage from recent days from various establishments in Troop Bazaar and Bank Street at Koti as well as Abids to see if they could stop the duo.
Police teams have sounded alert in surrounding districts and intensified checks in twin cities and outskirts of the city. Police have booked a case, Crime 28/2026 for aggravated robbery, injuring a person by opening fire and violation of the Arms Act. Clues Team’s police visited the crime and collected two empty shells and commenced investigations. Khairatabad DCP K. Shilpavalli along with senior officials inspected the crime scene.
Abdul Rinshad, injured in a shooting by robbers who took away his bag containing Rs6 lakh, told the police that he had come to the city on January 7 to purchases clothes wholesale for his family business back in Kerala.
In his complaint, Rinshad said his father Abdul Aziz ran a readymade kids’ clothing business from Kozhikode, Kerala. On his arrival earlier in the month, Rinshad began staying at Jannath Apartments, Nampally. He said that as some purchases had not materialised, his cousin Mishban had advised him to deposit the cash at an ATM, Hyderabad police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said.
Accordingly, Rinshad reached the SBI Main Branch ATM at Bank Street, Koti, in a vehicle belonging to his friend Ameer to deposit the cash. While he was doing so, two unidentified persons approached him from behind, threatened him with a firearm and made away with the bag. They opened two rounds of fire, striking the victim in the leg.
The public is requested to share any information related to suspicious movements by dialling 100. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, he added.
Rinshad used to buy clothes in wholesale from Hyderabad for sale in Kerala. He had deposited money at the same time least four to five times a week, police sources said.
The firing incident at Koti early on Friday has left locals shaken. “I was walking in Gujarati Galli (lane beside the incident site), when I heard a banging sound. It wasn’t loud, since vehicles were going, but it was audible and was out of place. I walked out and saw two people tending to a man who was bleeding from his leg,” Imtiaz, a local resident, told Deccan Chronicle.
“I was confused and shocked, but by then a few people had gathered around. Someone called both the police and an ambulance, and the man was taken away. It was very frightening to see blood on the road,” Imtiaz said.
Another onlooker, who was watching the police and Clues team investigation, said, “This is a busy place with SBI’s main branch nearby, bus stops, hospital, market areas and constant public movement. If such shootings happen here, it feels scary to go past this area.”
A shoe seller, opposite the incident site, said “We never expected a shooting to happen here, that too that early in the morning. I hope the police increase patrolling in the area and gives us public some more security.”
A series of high-profile shooting cases reported in the city since 2024 January has brought the spotlight on the increasing circulation of illegal firearms. The suspects in Saturday’s incidents are suspected to have sourced the weapon from other states.
Following Saturday’s incident, we have been instructed to intensify frisking, surprise checks, night patrolling in sensitive areas, a senior police officer said. Security has also beefed up on bus stands, public places, railway stations to curb the flow of country-made weapons into the city.
