Fire breaks out at chemical factory in Cherlapally

A massive fire broke out at a storage facility of Sarvodaya Solvents, a chemical factory in Cherlapally Phase 1.

Hyderabad:A massive fire broke out at a storage facility of Sarvodaya Solvents, a chemical factory in Cherlapally Phase 1. There were no casualties and the plant was empty on Tuesday in view of a holiday declared by the management due to maintenance works.

The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. The fire spread quickly and thick flames and burning chemicals caused a thick cloud of smoke to spread over the area.

The fire spread to an adjacent company, which was quickly brought under control. The neighbouring company deals with rubber materials and tyres, which are inflammable.

Medchal-Malakgiri district fire officer V. Srinivas told Deccan Chronicle said that the Sarvodaya Solvents structure had four floors containing reactors. The structure collapsed under the heat of the fire, and a small amount of chemicals was leaking from the premises. “Measures are being taken to control it," he said.

DFO Srinivas said fire officials received a call at 6.45 pm, and the personnel reached the spot in 10 minutes. Chemicals fed the fire, which spread rapidly and gave off thick smoke.

“The fire was brought under control in a couple of hours but the smoke did not clear out immediately,” he said.

Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu along with zonal ACP T. Mahesh and local police reached the spot and monitored the fire-fighting operations. Additionally, the integrated command control centre informed the Water Board headquarters which deputed two managers to the spot.

Firefighters equipped with 9,000-litre capacity water bowser trucks immediately swung into action. The bowser vehicles played a critical role in dousing the flames. The bowsers provided were from Malkajgiri, Malkajgiri 1, Hayatnagar, Cherlapally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad and Gandhi Outpost.
