Fire Body To Educate People On Electric Safety
FSAI will organise workshops for electricity professionals

Hyderabad: With nearly 60 per cent of reported fire incidents in India linked to electrical faults, the Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI), Hyderabad Chapter, has decided to initiate a massive outreach campaign to spread awareness about electrical safety practices and safety inspections to prevent fire risks in the country.
Speaking at the seminar ‘Electrical Safety Excellence — Beyond Compliance’ organised by FSAI, K. Nanda Kumar, chief electrical inspector to the government, said that, as India's infrastructure ecosystem grows in scale and complexity, stakeholders must focus on adopting robust safety practices, quality installations, and regular audits to minimise risks and protect lives.
The seminar — which brought together regulators, policymakers, consultants, engineers, safety professionals and industry leaders — discussed critical electrical safety provisions under the National Building Construction Standards (NBCS) 2026.
Vikram Singh Mann, the director-general of Telangana Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency and Civil Defence, admitted that a significant number of fire incidents continue to occur due to electrical faults and unsafe installations. “Preventing such incidents requires greater collaboration between regulators, industry, designers, installers, and end users,” he said.
Linga Reddy, chief engineer, electrical R&B department, said that the updated framework presents an opportunity for the industry to adopt safer design practices.
Manoj Wahi, the president of FSAI Hyderabad Chapter, said his organisation will undertake a six-pillared action to promote electrical safety in the country.
He said FSAI will organise workshops for electricity professionals about safe electricity practices as part of a capacity-building initiative. It will also promote electric safety inspections of each house as part of the Ghar Suraksha Audit initiative, as most fire accidents reportedly occurred in old buildings having sub-optimal internal wiring.
FSAI will also raise awareness among schoolchildren and employees of small businesses about the safety practices with regard to the use of electric appliances. It will also begin massive social media outreach to educate people about basic safety concepts, such as using appropriate MCBs and early warning signs of faulty internal wiring, among others.
They will also educate people on emerging challenges of electric vehicles and new technologies.
