NIMS Treated Over 5.44 Lakh Patients in Seven Months: Director
Hyderabad: Over 5.44 lakh patients received medical care at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) from January till July this year, informed the director Dr N Bheerappa in a review meeting held with the Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha at the Aarogyasri Trust office in Jubilee Hills on Friday. The minister reviewed the medical services being provided to patients at NIMS. This was in the aftermath of the death of a farmer from Mahabubnagar who attempted suicide and later died allegedly due to being denied treatment at various government hospitals, including NIMS.
The minister stressed the need for greater vigilance in handling emergency cases. He directed that all patients arriving at the emergency ward must be admitted without delay, stabilised with immediate treatment and then shifted to the appropriate department.
Dr Beerappa highlighted that 80 to 100 patients visit the NIMS emergency ward daily, with more than half of them arriving in critical condition after first seeking treatment in private or corporate hospitals. Some private hospitals, he noted, discharge patients prematurely, before full recovery and refer them to government hospitals such as NIMS, Osmania and Gandhi, creating serious complications.
The minister instructed that priority must be given to patients coming directly to NIMS and those referred from government hospitals, while ensuring that patients arriving from private and corporate hospitals are also treated with compassion and proper care. He further directed officials to take strict action against private hospitals discharging patients midway through treatment.
To strengthen emergency response, the minister emphasised the need for close coordination among Gandhi, Osmania, NIMS and other government hospitals. He directed that whenever emergency beds are full in one hospital, patients should be referred and admitted to another hospital. Before referral, necessary first aid and stabilisation must be provided and where required, a doctor should accompany the patient in the ambulance.
The minister also cautioned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against duty doctors and RMOs for any negligence in patient admission or referral.
Dr Beerappa informed that NIMS has been performing well in providing medical services, with more than half the patients being treated free of cost under government health schemes such as Aarogyasri and EHS. He added that patient inflow at NIMS has also increased significantly. The hospital has also successfully performed more than 100 kidney transplant surgeries this year.
Early Surgery Vital for Children with Pectus Excavatum: Expert
Hyderabad: Pectus Excavatum, also known as sunken chest, is a condition where children have a dent in their ribs, giving less space to the heart. "It needs to be corrected at the early stages of development, latest by 12 or 13 years, or else can have worse effects on the individual," said Dr Anita Bhalla, HOD, Department of CT Surgery, Osmania General Hospital and Government General and Chest Hospital, Hyderabad.
To help young surgeons learn how the corrective surgery is done in a less invasive manner, Osmania General Hospital is organising PECTUS 2025, a comprehensive workshop focused on pectus and chest wall surgery. The two-day event will be held on August 30 and 31.
PECTUS 2025 is expected to draw young surgeons from across the country for an opportunity to not just observe complex chest wall procedures but also simulate and perform them under expert supervision. The workshop blends live surgical demonstrations, simulation-based learning and hands-on practice.
The experts who will be demonstrating these surgeries include globally renowned names such as Dr Shyam Kolvekar from the UK along with leading Indian experts Dr L M Darlong, Dr Rajkamal Vishnu and Dr Balasubramoniam K R. Their participation is seen as a major draw for attendees eager to advance their skills in this specialised field.
“These cases are usually overlooked creating problems for individuals living with this condition. I have been trying to involve doctors at Niloufer Hospital to identify the condition in young children and do corrective surgeries at the right time. They will be participating in the workshop as well,” said Dr Anita Bhalla who is also the event’s organising secretary.
