Fatal Crashes Dip as Malkajgiri Records 1,788 Accidents

Malkajgiri Police recorded 1,788 road accidents in the first half of 2026, with fatalities declining due to stricter enforcement and road safety measures.

A total of 1,788 road accidents were reported across the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate in the first half of 2026, with scientific analysis showing human error was responsible for 1,443 crashes. The commissionerate recorded 162 fatal accidents that claimed 171 lives, while 1,626 non‑fatal accidents left 1,588 people injured.

Authorities attributed the majority of human‑error accidents to overspeeding, wrong‑route driving, drunken driving, mobile phone use while driving, illegal parking, signal jumping and rash driving. Another 345 crashes were linked to road engineering deficiencies such as narrow stretches, sharp curves, slopes and roads under construction. Most accidents occurred on urban and internal roads, followed by NH‑65.

Officials said fatalities declined in the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Deaths fell from 32 to 27 in January, 51 to 18 in February, 43 to 34 in March, remained unchanged at 33 in April, dropped from 32 to 26 in May and declined from 45 to 28 in June. The reduction was attributed to intensified enforcement, engineering interventions and sustained awareness programmes under the Arrive Alive initiative.

Focused engineering measures at accident‑prone spots reduced the number of identified black spots from 99 last year to 50 this year. Improvements included rumble strips, signboards, pothole repairs and other interventions at 106 locations in coordination with road‑owning agencies.

As part of the campaign, Malkajgiri Police conducted 1,997 road safety awareness programmes in five phases, reaching 98,519 participants including motorists, students, commercial drivers and the public. The commissionerate also launched a Helmet Bank at Sangeet Junction and plans to expand awareness drives across educational institutions while continuing engineering improvements with the Municipal Corporation of Malkajgiri and other agencies.
