Farmers Protest Over Turmeric Prices, Damage Market Yard Office In Nizamabad
Turmeric prices are reportedly around ₹15,000 per quintal, they are being paid only ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 in actual transactions: Farmers

NIZAMABAD: Tense situation prevailed at the Nizamabad agriculture market yard on Wednesday as farmers staged a protest demanding remunerative prices for turmeric.
Farmers from Nizamabad, Jagtial and Nirmal districts participated in the agitation, alleging that they were not being paid fair prices despite expectations of higher rates. Some protesters damaged furniture in the market yard office and raised slogans against officials, demanding implementation of the “2.0-yard turmeric purchase” system.
According to farmers, while turmeric prices are reportedly around ₹15,000 per quintal, they are being paid only ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 in actual transactions. They alleged delay and lack of transparency in price declaration by traders.
Protesters later moved to the Nizamabad RTC bus stand and continued their demonstration, leading to heavy police deployment at the market yard, bus stand and nearby areas including Devi Road and Namdevwada.
Market officials said efforts were being made to resolve the issue and assured that the situation would improve from April 20. They said the matter would be settled amicably.
Market committee officials, including the chairman and secretary, were away in Hyderabad at the time of the protest and later returned to Nizamabad.
Police intervened to bring the situation under control and restored order after tension prevailed for several hours.
