Experts Meet on Coinage, Economy of South India

A total of 76 research papers were submitted by scholars from different states who will participate in the seminar.

Hyderabad: The 107th annual national conference of the Numismatic Society of India, themed ‘Coinage and Economy of Southern India’, will be hosted for the first time by the department of heritage in collaboration with the Numismatic Society of India for two days, starting from December 11 at Dr Marri Channa Reddy HRD Institute.

“The department is conducting this event 80years post independence,” said department director Prof K. Arjun Rao. The last time it conducted the event was in 1941. He said this shows the government’s support for research, in addition to the conservation of sites and museums.

A total of 76 research papers were submitted by scholars from different states who will participate in the seminar. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and tourism minister Jupally Krishna Rao will inaugurate the session. As part of the seminar, several excavated coins will be exhibited for people at the event.

Numismatic Society of India chairman Dr D. Raja Reddy said “The society was founded by five Britishers and one Parsi from India. They realised that coins were essential for reconstructing the history of India. Without the ancient coins, the Brahmi Script may not have been decoded.” He added that the Puranas do not clearly tell us who founded Satavahana dynsasty, but with the help of coins it was found out. Coins also tell us who ruled from which year and the lineage of the kings.
