Evening Showers Slow Traffic in Hyderabad

Hyderabad:A sharp spell of rain caught commuters during the evening rush hour in parts of Hyderabad on Monday, slowing traffic on several busy stretches even as the day's heaviest rainfall was recorded outside the city.

The showers made the evening commute difficult at several locations, with motorists slowing down on wet roads and congestion building during peak-hour traffic. However, the impact was uneven as the rainfall was brief and localised across the city. Hyderabad Traffic Police also reported congestion on the Begumpet Flyover towards Kattamaisamma, where a minor accident, rather than the rain alone, contributed to the traffic snarl.

Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), supplied by the state Planning Department, highlighted the contrast in rainfall across the state. Between 8.30 am and 9 pm, Hyderabad district recorded no average rainfall, while Medchal-Malkajgiri received just 0.1 mm and Rangareddy 0.8 mm. The state's average rainfall during the period stood at 3.9 mm, although several stations recorded significantly higher amounts.

Medak recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 67 mm, followed by Shankarampet with 57.8 mm, Podichanpally with 56 mm and Chegunta with 48.5 mm, all in Medak district. Julurpad in Bhadradri Kothagudem received 47.5 mm, Gandhari in Kamareddy 45.8 mm and Mogdampalle in Sangareddy 45.5 mm.

At the district level, Medak recorded the highest average rainfall at 14.3 mm, followed by Kamareddy (14 mm), Bhadradri Kothagudem (12.8 mm), Mulugu (11.9 mm) and Nirmal (11.2 mm).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places across Telangana until Tuesday morning, accompanied by strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places, particularly in the northern and eastern districts, during the subsequent period.
