Hyderabad: Hundreds of residents from gated communities in Erragadda staged a protest on Saturday opposing the State government’s proposal to allocate land for a Muslim graveyard in the area.
Residents from Kalpataru, Brigade Citadel, Vasavi Brundavanam, and Janapriya said they were not against the establishment of a graveyard but raised concerns about locating it in the middle of a densely populated residential zone.
The issue surfaced during the recent Jubilee Hills bypoll, when the land was allocated through the Waqf Board. Following initial protests, residents approached the High Court, which ordered a status quo. However, residents alleged that despite the matter being sub judice, authorities entered the site through another gate and began ground preparation on December 31, 2025.
“We gathered immediately and stopped the levelling work. The proposed graveyard will inconvenience nearly 5,000 flats and residents. We strongly oppose and want the government to revoke its decision,” said Ch. Hanumanthu Naidu of Brigade Citadel.
Residents complained that the government proceeded without consulting them, despite their significant investments in housing. “We are not against any community but do not want a graveyard in the middle of a residential area,” said Madhusudan, another resident.

Syed, another resident, added: “We are not against the graveyard itself but want it located at a suitable place. The matter is already before the court, yet people are still entering the land from the back side and creating disturbances.”
