Engineering Student Raped in Hostel

Hyderabad: A 19-year-old engineering student was sexually assaulted in her hostel room in Manglapalli, Ibrahimpatnam police said on Thursday. The incident occurred late on Wednesday. The police were alerted following a call from a Karimnagar resident.
According to the police, the victim was alone in her room and did not lock the door. The accused, 22-year-old Akshith, a driver employed by the owner of the building, entered the hostel and assaulted the victim.
The hostel had recently been transferred to a new owner, Uma Devi. Since the change in ownership, security at the hostel had deteriorated, allowing the accused to enter the victim’s room on the first floor without being stopped.
The victim’s cries for help were heard by four other girls living in nearby rooms, yet none of them intervened or called the police. A patrolling vehicle was stationed just 200 meters from the hostel, and timely action could have prevented the assault.
However, one of the victim’s roommates, who was speaking with her cousin from Karimnagar, informed her cousin about the incident. The cousin then took the initiative to call the police.
The call was transferred to the local police and they arrived at the scene promptly. The victim was rushed to a hospital for medical examination and treatment. The victim and her parents received counseling from SHE teams. A case has been registered and the investigation is underway.
