Dry Spell: Kuntala, Pochera Waterfalls Get Flows Two Months Late

Both waterfalls just received rainwater, and there is little water flow now

KUNTALA (ADILABAD): The popular Kuntala and Pochera waterfalls have received rainwater nearly two months late following the dry spell due to the El Nino effect.

Both waterfalls just received rainwater, and there is little water flow now, but last year they were gushing with heavy water flow and large numbers of visitors and tourists thronged this spot this time last year.

The Kuntala is the highest waterfall in the state, 12km from Neredigonda mandal headquarters in the Adilabad district and well-connected to National Highway 44.

It takes time for the Kuntala and Pochera to receive full water and be in their full swing. Fisherman Bhattu Ashok, who is also working as a lifeguard for the tourists, said there was no water in the Kuntala till recently, but received it from Thursday.

He observed, “We used to start fishing in the Kuntala area from the first week of June, but this year is different due to the dry spell till the last week of July.”

Ashok observed that it takes 10 more days for fishing and for tourists to start enjoying the Kuntala in full scenic beauty with gushing milky water fed by continuous rains.

Pannala Kshemender Reddy of Boath said the El Nino effect hit the Kuntala and Pochera waterfalls for the first time in history. He said this was the first time they saw both the waterfalls go dry till the last week of July.

The Kuntala received rainwater from eight streams in the upstream including Dhannur, Boath, Pochera, Kadam, Degama and Buddigonda, while the flow into the Kadam irrigation project and all the streams and rivulets didn’t happen till a few days ago.

Bandi Satish of Bheemgal in Nizamabad, along with his family, came to Kuntala but was disappointed with the little water flow and said his family however enjoyed the scenic beauty of the location. He said they would try to come again after 15 days to enjoy the waterfall in full swing.

ITDA Utnoor and the tourism departments are constructing a Haritha Hotel including a reception hall, cottages, swimming pool and internal CC roads at some distance from Kuntala waterfall to attract visitors and tourists.
