Karimnagar: In an unusual incident during the first phase of panchayat elections, a 72-year-old voter allegedly chewed and swallowed a ballot paper while under the influence of alcohol in Korutla mandal of Jagtial district on Thursday.
The man, identified as Venkataiah of Venkatapur village, arrived at the polling station in an intoxicated state, police said. After entering the booth, he took the white ballot paper meant for the ward member election, chewed it and swallowed it instead of placing it in the ballot box.
He then attempted to chew the pink ballot paper for the Sarpanch election but did not swallow it fully. Polling staff noticed his behaviour as he exited the booth and immediately stopped him. He was later handed over to the police.
